Hi, friends! It's Walter with you today on the blog. I've been having a lot of fun with mixed media projects lately and would like to share a beautiful vintage style project with you. I love the old metal tiles or plates that you see on signs in older cities. They're often made of copper or brass and include the city name, date of founding, etc. That was the inspiration for this creation. Let's dive into how it was made!

Other Products Used:

  • TCW Monarch Stencil

  • Zuri Designs Vintage Vibes Mould

  • Finnabair & Prima Marketing Locks and Keys Mould

  • Prima Birds and Branches Mould

  • 49 and Market Paper

  • 5"x7" canvas media panel

  • Sizzix Definition Stamps

  • Strip of cardboard

  • Scorched Timber and Walnut Stain Distress Inks

  • Dark Brown Pigment Ink Pad

  • Perfect Caste Casting Resin, air dry clay, or resin

  • Moldable Foam Clay

  • Mod Podge

  • Craft glue

  • Super Glue

Directions:

I created the tile, keys, and birds prior to beginning the project. I mixed Perfect Cast according to directions, poured it into the Vintage Vibes mould, and let it cure. I used moldable foam clay and the other moulds to create the keys, birds, and branch. I let all pieces cure for 24 hours to ensure that they were okay to use for crafting.

I started by cutting the 49 and Market paper to 5"x7" and adhering it to the canvas with Mod Podge. I ink blended some Walnut Stain Distress Ink around the edges of the canvas to make it look older and worn and then ran the Scorched Timber Distress Ink pad around the edges of the panel.

I chose which images I wanted to stencil in each corner of the canvas and aligned the stencil to create the first one. A palette knife was used to apply the Sunset Blush Polishing Plaster. I repeated this step for the remaining three corners of the canvas and set the canvas aside to dry.

Stencil and plaster create intricate patterns on a weathered paper background. A pot of Polishing Plaster is visible on a grid-lined surface.

It was now time to start painting! I started with the tile. My design included a very aged copper tile and Aged Copper Shimmering Matte Acrylic was the perfect choice for the base layer. The color is so rich and bright - it's gorgeous! I painted base of the tile with it and excluded the flower and leaves since I wanted them different colors. One coat of paint did the trick and looked great. I used a hair dryer to speed up the paint drying process.

I then used Afterglow Shimmering Matte Acrylic to paint the flower petals, Honey Gold to paint the pistil, and Vintage Patina to paints the leaves and stem.

Next up was painting the other pieces. I cut a 3/4" x 4" piece of cardboard, removed the paper on one side to reveal the corrugated part, and painted it with Vintage Mercury Shimmering Matter Acrylic. Once dry, I added some spots of Shadow Shimmering Matte Acrylic in the crevices to darken them. I painted the birds, keys, and branch with Shadow and then added touches of Vintage Mercury to further differentiate them. All pieces were set aside to dry.

Once dry, it was time add some patina to the pieces. I like to do a two-step process to achieve an incredible patina look. The first step is to take a fair amount of the Perfect Glaze Medium and mix just a small amount of Vintage Patina Shimmering Matte Acrylic into it. This makes the paint more transparent, and it will sit on top of the already existing paint without covering it up completely. This step adds a darker patina shade. I applied a coat of this to all of the pieces and let it dry. The second step is to mix in a small amount of Seaglass Shimmering Matte Acrylic to the patina mixture. This lightens/brightens the mixture and will allow a lighter shade of patina to sit on top of the other paint layers, which helps add more depth to your project. I painted a coat of it onto the items and let them dry. I also added a little coat over the stenciled areas of the canvas to help age them as well.

I chose to add the definition of the word love to the canvas by stamping it onto the bottom right-hand corner of the canvas with brown pigment ink. It was now time to assemble the canvas! I started by glueing down the strip of cardboard at the top of the canvas between the two stenciled corners. I then used super glue to adhere the tile to the canvas. I used super glue because the tile is heavier than the other components and I want to ensure that it will stay adhered in place. I then put glue onto the back of the other pieces and placed them onto the canvas.

I am truly pleased by how this turned out! The coats of patina build upon each other and give it such an aged look. I love the look of the flower petals - as though they have years of dirt and effects of the elements on them. What's your favorite part?
